Choosing an off-grid power system is one of the most significant investments you’ll ever make for your home. You’ve likely spent hours researching lithium chemistry, inverter efficiency, warranties, and solar array positioning. But there is one component that doesn’t show up on a spec sheet, yet it’s the single most common point of failure for off-grid homeowners: The Installer’s Longevity.
At our office, we receive ‘the call’ way too often. It usually starts with: “I had my system installed three years ago, something is wrong, and I can’t get a hold of the original company. Can you help me?”
These are referred to in the industry as ‘orphaned’ systems. They are high-tech, expensive setups left in the dark because the ‘expert’ who built them is no longer around to stand by them.
We hate seeing this happen. And oftentimes we have our hands tied and can’t adequately help – without drastic and expensive intervention.
Australian Standards in both electrical work and solar and battery systems are incredibly stringent – as they should be. They have also been upgraded regularly over the past few years.
When we alter ANY part of an off-grid system, our installers can become responsible for bringing the whole system up to current Standards – which can be a complex, time-consuming, and expensive exercise. This is why it is sometimes cheaper and easier to replace an entire off-grid system, rather than improve or upgrade one part of it – which is counterintuitive and wasteful.
Not only this, but there have been some inexperienced, or just plain dodgy, off-grid installers over the past few decades. These two factors are the main reasons why most Australian installers will not touch someone else’s work. Doing so may risk their licenses, livelihood, and reputation (if they end up being blamed for issues not related to their remedial work).
Off-Grid systems have complex components that interact with other complex components, to provide you with an essential service – your power. Over a decade of operation, you will likely encounter:
Most of the time, the need for a reliable installer is much more subtle than a blackout. We have clients from 10 or 15 years ago who call us up – not because of a disaster – but for the general support and advice that only the original installer can provide.
This may be with questions like; “We’re thinking of buying a new Air Conditioner, can our current capacity handle the surge and do you recommend any models?”, “I’ve got power but I’m seeing an alert on my inverter screen – what do I do?”, “I’ve bought a new backup generator, can you please wire this into my setup?”, or “We’ve been off-grid for a decade now, and we’re ready to add more batteries. Can you help us scale up?”
For an orphaned off-grid owner, these simple questions become huge frustrations unnecessarily.
When your installer goes quiet, you lose more than just a repairman if things break – you lose the institutional memory of your home’s power supply. Your original installer knows why they chose a specific cable size for your run or why they programmed your batteries to discharge at a certain rate. That history is invaluable.
In a majority of cases, the manufacturer’s product warranty only covers the part replacement, not the labour, diagnosis, or shipping. If your inverter fails and your installer is out of business, you become responsible for:
A warranty is only as good as the person available to claim it for you.
Expertise and longevity costs more than just the solar panels and inverters. By supporting a business with a team of happy experts, with a history of retaining its staff long-term, you are ensuring the longevity of your own investment. You’re paying for the peace of mind that when a storm hits at 8:00 PM on a Sunday, there is a business with an office, a team of technicians, and a reputation to uphold that will answer the phone.
We encourage everyone – regardless of who they eventually buy from – to look for these three things when seeking out an off-grid installer:
We’ve compiled a few more tips of what to look out for in your off-grid quotes, which is worth a read too.
We believe that when we install a system, we aren’t just selling hardware – we are becoming your utility provider. We take that responsibility seriously because we’ve seen the stress that orphaned users face, and we don’t want that for anyone.
Whether you are just starting your journey or looking to upgrade, make sure you choose a partner who will be there to answer the phone in 2035.
